Vaginal support device (pessary)

A pessary is a soft, flexible device that is placed in the vagina to help support the bladder, vagina, uterus, and/or rectum. Pessaries are made in many different shapes and sizes. A pessary is a non-surgical way to treat pelvic organ prolapse and sometimes incontinence.

What Are Pelvic Floor Disorders?

When childbirth or other circumstances weaken or damage the pelvic floor, the pelvic organs, including the bladder, vagina and bowel, can be greatly impacted. Pelvic floor disorders include:

Incontinence

Incontinence: loss of bladder or bowel control, leakage of urine or feces. Incontinence can be more than a physical problem. It can disrupt your quality of life if it's not managed well.

Prolapse

Prolapse: descent or falling of either the bladder, uterus, or rectum. The drop of these pelvic organs is 0ften noted as a bulge or feeling of pressure or falling out. The bulge resulting from this pressure may be felt or seen.

Emptying disorders

Emptying disorders: difficulty urinating or moving bowels. When the bladder has a hard time emptying like it should, more urine is made than it can hold, and results in overflow incontinence.

Constipation can also be the cause or result of pelvic floor dysfunction.

Pain

Pain: discomfort in the lower back, pelvis, bladder and/or urethra. Several different bladder and pelvic floor problems can cause pain. Pain should be treated so it does not cause more health and quality of life issues.

Overactive bladder

Frequent need to void, This could be due to bladder pressure, urgency, or urge incontinence (an inability to overcome the urge to urinate, resulting in leaking).

Waking more than once a night, or going to the bathroom during the day more than every two hours indicates pelvic floor dysfunction.

The First Visit

At St. Louis Women's Physical Therapy, we provide physical therapy services to residents in the St. Louis area, including St. Charles, St. Louis, Warren, and Lincoln Counties. The first visit starts with a thorough assessment of your injury or condition.

After a thorough examination, Dr. Jen provides an in depth explanation and education about the current problem and cause. She then develops a customized program for you, and it is likely that you will receive the beginning of your treatment at this time.

Prior to your first visit, we will send you forms via email to fill out online. If you would prefer to have printed versions of these forms, we can provide this as well.

You do NOT need a physician referral before treatment can begin.

We deliver our therapy with an emphasis on hands-on, one-on-one, evidence-informed treatments.

While not required, it could be beneficial to wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. Please have a complete list of any prescribed or over-the-counter medications that you take regularly.
